Emmett Crosswhite Livery Stable
1917
Stallion in photo was named Rhone. He was award winning. Sold to Crosswhite by roper who ran Central Livery where part of Harbor Hotel was on 7th and Lincoln. Eugene Crosswhite is on pony. This photo ran in the Steamboat Pilot July 1972, "A Stable situation in 1917" "Young Bert Hamphill came to Steamboat Springs as a 17-year old in 1917 and went to work as a stable hand. The picture shows him leaning against the door on a sunny day in summer. We're told that the horse of the left weighed 2400 lbs. while the pony on the right just 240 lbs. Bert lived as well as worked in the stable where a Mr. Rollen (or Rowan?) was teamster. The young man left Routt County when he was 21 and went into the Army, serving in France during World War I."
